Abstract:

Materials & Methods 20 patients with sputum smear positive pulmonary tuberculosis were treated with retreatment regimen comprising of levofloxacin (500 mg daily), isoniazid and para aminosalicylic acid plus additional drugs wherever indicated. They were followed up and assessed by sputum smear microscopy and chest X- ray at regular intervals for the whole duration of treatment which ranged from 15-18 months.

Results 15 patients completed treatment and achieved a satisfactory response in form of persistent sputum negativity & radio logically quiescent disease.1 patient had to stop drugs due to severe gastrointestinal intolerance.1 patient defaulted after 4 months & three patient died before completion of treatment due to disease related causes.

Conclusion Levofloxacin can be used as a companion drug in retreatment of pulmonary tuberculosis along with other drugs. The advantage being a high safety profile, low-cost & easy availability which are important determinants, especially in countries with scarce resources.
